Storytimes at Awnies House

awnies house

The artist himself is always busy at his easel, painting and drawing new pieces to add to his already impressive collection. The furniture in the living room and bedrooms is traditional Americana, while the kitchen and bathrooms are updated with modern appliances and fixtures. In 2009, Awnie started her own website where she could post her artwork free of charge.

Awnie’s bedroom

In 2006 a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant was issued, as well as a US$4.5 million construction loan through First Republic Bank, which restarted restoration efforts. The project included a new structural support system, restoration or replacement of damaged blocks, restoration of windows, and a new roof. Restoration work was completed in 2007 at a cost of nearly US$6.4 million.[17] No announcement was made regarding access by the public and the Ennis House remains closed to public visitors.

Here, PhD student David R. Richardson gives a brief overview of several of Wright’s most notable projects in the Grand Canyon state. The Ennis House was also featured in the Thirty Seconds to Mars rock bands' documentary Artifact, and is where part of their album This Is War was recorded. In August 2005, the house was returned to its original name, and the Trust for Preservation of Cultural Heritage was renamed the Ennis House Foundation. Initially supervised by Frank Lloyd Wright's son Lloyd Wright, the owners took over construction supervision after the superstructure reached the windows.

The outside of awnie’s home

A film documenting the house, called The Ennis House, was shot in hi definition digital 3D by film maker Tom Koester. It covers the construction (briefly), a grand tour of the house (closed to the public), and the damage stemming from the 1994 earthquake and the subsequent restoration and repair prior to the sale of the house to its current private owner. An early cut of the film premiered at the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy Conference in Chicago, October 2007, but has had few public showings.

Designed by noted architect James Gamble Rogers for his own use in 1905, the house is now available for rental through Historic New England. The home features a large living room with a built-in loft area, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. There is also a large kitchen with granite countertops and stainless appliances, as well as a formal dining room.

About Awnie’s House: A Look Inside The Home Of an Artist

When I walked into Awnie’s house, I was immediately taken by how well her bookshelf represented her personality. Most of the books were about art, and she had a few that were about other things as well. She also had a few art prints from different artists that she was proud of.

Awnie’s desk is filled with art supplies, including paints, brushes, and paper. She has created many incredible pieces, such as the Awnie’s House, but she also makes furniture and other items to go along with them. An artist’s house is typically filled with art supplies, sketches and paintings galore.

When looking at Awnie’s house, it is easy to see that art was a big part of her life. Her home is decorated with artwork from all over the world, some of which she has collected for many years.Awnie’s first love was painting, but she soon realized that she could make a living as an artist if she could find a way to get her work seen by more people. She started out by selling her paintings online and in local art galleries, but she was always looking for ways to make her work more accessible to wider audiences.

The Ennis House—a veritable Hollywood icon, with over 80 screen appearances—is the last and largest of Wright’s four Los Angeles-area “textile block” houses. A cartoon representation is featured in South Park as the base of a Chinese gang in the episode "Wing", satirizing the popular association of the Ennis House with criminal and/or Asian characters in films. Ennis House is also represented in cartoon series "The Venture Bros." as super villain, The Monarch's house in season 4. The house has also been used as a location for commercials, fashion magazine shoots and music videos, including 3T's "Why" featuring Michael Jackson. S Club 7's video for the single "Have You Ever" shows the band members living an everyday life in the house and Ricky Martin music video song "Vuelve". More damage occurred due to the 1994 Northridge earthquake and the record precipitation during the 2004–2005 rainy season.

Some homes even have unique features like artist balconies or gardens that provide a beautiful backdrop for their work. Even before its completion the Ennis House was marked by structural instability. Concrete blocks had cracked and lower sections of the walls buckled under tension.

Awnie himself is a fascinating artist with a long and varied career that has taken him around the world. Born in Portsmouth in 1949, he began painting as a teenager and soon developed a reputation as one of New England’s most promising young artists. In 1976 he moved to London where he worked for many years before returning to Portsmouth in 1998. Frank Lloyd Wright’s connection to Arizona, the location of his personal winter home Taliesin West, runs deep, with his architectural influence seen all over the Valley.

Perched atop a hill in the Los Feliz neighborhood, it is among the best residential examples of Mayan Revival architecture in the country. The Ennis House rises in stages, with over 27,000 blocks arranged across a concrete platform and buttressed by a retaining wall. Though concrete was still considered a new material in the 1920s, especially for home construction, Wright believed it had promising potential for affordable housing. He created a block construction system with patterned surfaces, which lended a unique textural appearance to both the exteriors and interiors of his residences. The concrete—a combination of gravel, granite and sand from the site—was hand-cast in aluminum molds to create blocks measuring 16”x 16” x 3.5” that were then woven together with steel rods, giving the textile block houses their name. The Ennis House is unusually monumental and vertical for a Wright residence, but when the architect completed it in 1924 he immediately considered it his favorite.

The use of decomposed granite from the site to color the textile blocks introduced natural impurities to the concrete mix, and combined with air pollution caused premature decay. Following La Miniatura in Pasadena, and the Storer and Freeman Houses in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, the structure is the fourth and largest of Wright's textile block designs, constructed primarily of interlocking pre-cast concrete blocks, in the northern Los Angeles area. You can find everything from paintings and sketches of everyday objects to fanciful landscapes and abstract works of art. It’s easy to get lost in Awnie’s world, and you’ll soon be inspired to start creating your own works of art.

blog website design

This would suit a blog where the reader doesn’t need to be guided to a specific article, but gives equal importance to all the articles. The category selection at the top of the grid means the users can quickly get to the area they are interested in. This blog page focuses the viewer on a three-column grid with buttons to encourage the visitor to click through to read the article. As the blog doesn’t use featured article sliders or images, the visitor can quickly see a number of articles that may interest them. If you’re creating a more professional, but friendly blog, you may like to take some hints from this example.

Beyond that, she offers a lot of free resources, including a blog and online workshop. The newly designed website is simple and elegant, featuring a subtle animation in the header with the company’s mission as the welcome message. Below that, it shows vital stats, our products, job opportunities, and more. While there are many website builders out there, WordPress.org is by far the most popular, powering 43.2% of the entire internet! By installing the right plugins, even beginners can build the site of their dreams.

Here’s a quick overview of the elements you should consider while designing your website to make sure everything works well together. What do you do when you need to convert plain text into formatted HTML? Perhaps you reach for Markdown or manually write in the element tags yourself. Or maybe you have one or two of the dozens of online tools that will do it for you. In this tutorial, Alexis Kypridemos picks those tools apart and details the steps for how we can do it ourselves with a little vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Any time in the future, if you feel the need to add/delete/edit a page or a post, it is super easy to do all this with WordPress.

Choose striking photos to show your brand or theme

Your entire blog should be cohesive, and each page (or post) should match the look and feel of the rest of your blog. For example, you wouldn’t want your homepage to be bland and then other pages to be vibrant technicolor. A common way to increase engagement with your readers is by asking questions directly in your blog posts. Asking simple questions or opening an opportunity for them to ask questions is a great way to create conversations with more of your readers. Both of these blog layouts are unique, but they do a fantastic job of keeping their content accessible and visually appealing—which is no easy feat. If you do choose to include a sidebar, though, try to keep it as clean, simple, and useful as possible.

While it can function as both a static and dynamic CMS, you’ll have to purchase WordPress themes and pay for Wordpress plugins to get that functionality. Many designers have made the switch from Wordpress to Webflow and never looked back. Search engines are competitive and it can be difficult to outrank established blogs. When choosing the topics, make sure you keep your niche and audience in mind. In especially scenic destinations, such as Alaska or Scandinavia, you might want to bring binoculars and/or a DSLR camera (rather than relying on your phone for photos). Don't forget accessories like extra batteries, chargers and memory cards. You can sweeten your cabin bathroom by bringing a bathroom spray to mask unpleasant odors. A small inflatable kiddie pool or tub packs down small and can be used to give your little one a bath. Once you've packed all the clothing, it's time to accessorize. Definitely don't forget the ultimate evening wear — comfy pajamas — especially if you're sharing a cabin with family or friends.

What to put in your carry-on bag

Even though I love packing cubes and hanging toiletry bags, sometimes, a good old ziplock baggy is what you need. The water on board the ship is filtered and safe to drink, so bring refillable water bottles to sip from while on the ship by the pool and especially in port when going to the beach. Don’t pack dirty shoes straight into your luggage and next to your clothing. Shoe bags are great to keep your shoes protected, scuff free and are more sanitary. Overall, pack what you are comfortable wearing, but do check your cruise line’s dress codes.

With plenty to see and do, and tons of new people to meet along the way, many cruise vacationers find themselves returning year after year. Take out the trash — All of those items that you have just thrown out of the fridge need to be disposed of. Take them, and any other garbage bags out to the trash before you go. It can be easy to overspend while onboard and trying to live the luxury lifestyle regardless of your budget.

The Only Cruise Packing List You’ll Ever Need

For shorter cruises, just omit a few outfits to suit the length of your trip. These are in the "very easy to forget" category of our cruise packing list. You won't realize you forgot some of these items until you get ready for dinner on Night One of your cruise. Many cruisers tend to overpack when it comes to clothes and shoes but sometimes forget about other necessities. Some must-pack items for cruises defy categorization but are important nonetheless.

Liquids Are OKAnother way cruise packing is easier is that there aren’t rules regarding liquid sizes. You likely know that airlines limit you to three ounces of liquids to get through security. That’s one less thing to worry about when packing for your cruise and very convenient for passengers who are driving to the port. The following items may be tempting to bring, but cruise lines either take care of these for you or they aren’t allowed on the ship. But if you are packing for a family, then there are some things that good to bring. The following items are ideal for a cabin to make it more comfortable during your cruise.

Your specific itinerary will also have an impact on your packing list. If sailing for 7 days, you'll obviously need more stuff than a 3 nighter. You'll want to pack your tablet, portable video game system and e-reader for both your pre-cruise travel and the sailing itself. Or, skip the tech and bring a few books, as many cruise ships no longer offer onboard libraries. Some cruise lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line, have a relaxed attitude toward dinner attire, and you can come as you are.

This will reimburse you if you must cancel or cut your cruise short due to an emergency. When shopping for travel insurance, read the fine print to know what's covered and what's not.

Below are the money and document items that you'll want to add to your cruise packing checklist. Below are the health essentials that you'll want to add to your cruise packing checklist. Another set of easily forgotten cruise packing list items... If you forget dental floss, you'll probably be just fine. Forget your contacts, though, and things could get a bit less enjoyable. Now that you know what to put on your cruise packing list, you'll also want to know what to leave out.

Travel aids like earplugs, a travel pillow, and a sleeping mask can help make long flights or car rides more comfy. A pack of travel-sized antibacterial wipes is always a good idea to help wipe down germ-prone surfaces as needed. Tuck away your driver’s license, too (as well as an international driver’s license if you plan on renting a car abroad). Foreign travel also means having a passport on hand that’s stamped with any visas, if necessary.

That's why we recommend travel insurance before you set sail. Now, you're probably wondering whether you should purchase travel insurance for your trip and if it's worth it. The biggest challenge when packing for a cruise is preparing for various activities and weather conditions. You know those little TSA-approved plastic bottles that came with your carry-on?

Sure, it’s vacation, but that doesn’t mean you can get by on sunshine and frothy drinks alone. You’ll need some essential documentation and a properly stocked wallet to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch. Keep hand wipes and sanitizer close on hand to help keep the germs at bay while you’re on the go. Pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash, too. Contact lens wearers should bring all the related gear (including a case and solution), and a pair of tweezers and a nail file and/or clippers will surely come in handy, too.

Take the free versions of shampoo, conditioner, and lotion from your hotel the night before you leave. You can download our Cruise Trip Packing Checklist by clicking the button below. The accessible interactive PDF can be digitally checked off using any device or easily printed for your use.

Out on the ocean waves, it can get pretty chilly at night, no matter how tropical it may feel during the day. Whether you are new to the cruising life or a regular seafarer, taking a vacation onboard a luxury liner is an affordable and fun way to see the world and make new friends along the way. Seasoned cruisers and rookies alike get to enjoy action-packed days and fun-filled nights on a vacation that is as high energy or laid back as you want it to be.

Viking cruise cabins and suites: A guide to everything you want to know

cruise cabin reviews

This feature is known as a French balcony or Juliet balcony (a nod to the balcony of this type made famous in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet"). Technically, these French balconies are balconies, even if they're not quite as satisfying as a balcony with space to lounge. Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris have what some in the cruise industry call an "infinite veranda" — a balcony-like space created by a window wall that opens from the top down. Is a balcony something you can't live without when staying in a cabin on a cruise ship? Cruise lines make them easy to book, usually with only needing to click a checkbox to find accessible cabins. With thousands of people on the ship, elevators can be busy no matter the time of day.

If you've read this guide and are still confused about choosing a cabin on a cruise, I suggest you connect with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent. They can walk you through the entire booking process — and maybe get you a great price on the cabin you ultimately select. Just be wary of any offer promising a two-category upgrade (or similar).

However, on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas, the main dining room, buffet, specialty restaurants, and kid-friendly attractions are at the back of the ship. Aft cabins on a cruise ship (the ones at the very back of the ship) can be the most prized standard balcony cabins afloat. Because they can make you feel as though you are at the end of the world, offering 180-degree views over the ship's wake. Balconies in aft cabins are often much larger than balconies along the ship's sides. You'll find minisuites on many ships, which are a bit bigger than balcony cabins and more clearly defined sleeping areas and living spaces. Some lines only offer suites, like Silversea, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Seabourn.

At the push of a button, the top half of a floor-to-ceiling wall of glass in your cabin slides down like a car window to let in the fresh ocean air. If you want, you can close off the section of your room closest to the window by sliding shut a pair of folding doors. Once that is done, you have a cozy spot with two chairs and a cocktail table where you can admire the sea or enjoy your morning coffee — even if your cabinmate is still sleeping.

It could be a balcony cabin with a smaller porthole-like opening in the ship’s hull or an odd-shaped interior cabin on the same plush hallway with the ship’s fanciest suites. Most cruise ships have a choice of fully accessible cabins for those that require mobility aids. If your preference is to stay in a non-modified stateroom, you can still rely on the expertise of the design engineers, who generally place modified cruise cabins near the central elevators. Pioneered by Norwegian Cruise Line, solo traveler cabins are becoming more common across the industry. Whereas for many years solo cabins were usually interior grade, there are now oceanview and even balcony cabins available for solo travelers on some lines.

Just be aware that you can't use your balcony in rough seas when a watertight door seals off the space from the roiling water. Also, given the close-up view of rolling waves, these cabins are not appropriate for those who suffer from seasickness. Among the cabin placements we’ve already talked about, there are options to fit almost any budget.

Jewel of the Seas

In addition, each of the complexes has a boardroom with a long table that seats 12 people for meetings and catered dinner parties. There's an adjacent pantry that can be used by staff serving room service or catering hosted events. Among other personal touches related to Hagen, the company founder, are book, wine and music collections that he curated for the rooms.

Upload your stateroom photos and if we use them we will pay you 50 cents for each one we use. In a similar nod to functionality and ease of use, Viking had the remote controls for cabin televisions specially designed so they would only have a few buttons. Bathrooms in Viking cabins are serene, modernist escapes with luxurious travertine marble-lined walls; Scandinavian-influenced, wood-veneered vanities; shiny white sinks; and chrome fixtures.

Star of the Seas

As noted above, though, you'll only find the latter two types of cabins on Viking ocean ships. Viking currently operates nine traditional ocean ships aimed at the English-speaking market and two oceangoing expedition ships. Every single passenger room on all 11 of the vessels is either a balcony cabin or a suite with a balcony. As previously mentioned, that's highly unusual in the cruise business. If you’re a special needs passenger, then there is some good news. While most cabins are small, the ship will have a number of options for accessible cabins.

For those who love the sea and its soothing sounds, outside cabins are the obvious choice. Be sure to snag a balcony room, though, if you're on higher floors. That cabin placement allows the easiest access to the ship’s main features like dining and large entertainment venues.

These fares can be a great option for travelers who don't care much about cabin location or who don't spend much time in their room. At worst, you get a cheap cruise in a room that's a little smaller, somewhat noisier or a longer walk than other cabins, and you might not be eligible for certain extra-value booking perks. At best, you can get upgraded to a room in a higher cabin category than you paid for. You'll want to choose a midship cabin on a lower deck to experience less ship movement and rocking.

These accommodations afford a unique view of the sea since you aren't on a typical balcony that hangs off the ship, but in a cutout in the ship's superstructure. You'll have more privacy than with typical balcony cabins, since no one can see you from above or the side — but that's not the main draw. On some ships, you can find designated spa cabins on the same deck as the spa; on others, you'll probably be one or two decks away, sometimes with a semi-private elevator or staircase directly into the spa. Some ships offer cabins with direct access to the promenade deck, while the largest ships, including MSC World Europa, offer balconies overlooking an internal courtyard or promenade. Here’s how to select the best cruise ship cabin for your needs, whether you're seeking breathtaking views, peace and quiet, convenience, or the best value. Norwegian's Studio cabins have access to an exclusive lounge where single travelers can meet and mingle and grab snacks.

It’s not that you’ll feel more motion in them per se, but you won’t have the opportunity to get fresh air or a view of the horizon. Both can help calm the queasiness without you having to leave the cabin. The truth is, there is no objective answer to the question, "What is the best cabin position on a cruise ship?" It all depends on what's important to you.

Royal Caribbean sought to level the playing field on its Quantum Class ships by creating Super Studio balcony cabins. About the worst cabins on cruise ships / which staterooms to avoid. First of all, there's no such thing as "the worst cabin" - simply because to offer a bad product (even for cheap money) is not the proper way of doing a multibillion-dollar cruise travel vacation business. However, always try to avoid locations near elevators and public spaces, with at least 1 deck between your cabin and any crowded place - pools, dining and bar venues, children areas, lounges, nightclubs. NCL (Norwegian Lines) is well appreciated for offering a great variety of staterooms. NCL offers even garden and courtyard suites, and some of the best family cruise suites at sea featuring a separate living and dining area and exclusive access to a private courtyard with a pool and Jacuzzi.
